Day 90 Wednesday April 10 Bush Camp to Maun

by Henry

92 km, 220 m total ascent, 25°C maximum, projected to be overcast all day.

There was a temperature drop overnight, and for the first time in many weeks, we had dew condensation on our tents.

Early morning view of the road behind us as we cycled out of camp. We were extremely careful to look for goathead-type thorns in our tires before we started riding to avoid an early morning puncture.

Lunch was at 67 km. We had a tailwind. Most of us arrived at the lunch stop by 9:30 AM.

The remaining 24 km after lunch was quick, even though we were in Maun’s (population ~60,000) city traffic. We rode into Sedia Riverside Hotel and Camp before noon. We chose to upgrade for the rest day tomorrow and will have two nights in the hotel.

One of the main activities available for the rest day is a sightseeing flight over the Okavango Delta. When we crossed the Thamalakane River to get into Maun, it was completely dry due to drought, and the Delta will likely be in similar condition. We opted not to take the flight, and just take it easy on our rest day.

There was another inviting, clear swimmable pool, which is not always the case in Africa.

In the afternoon, we rode our bicycles to Spar and Woolworth's. This is not the old USA Woolworth’s; they sell hipster clothing and there is a gourmet grocery section. At Spar, we purchased a few snacks for our rest day.

On the way back to camp, we stopped at Marc’s Eatery for dinner, and ran into Arnie and Aussie Richard. Our tasty meal included eland stew and warthog stew. We also chatted with Kris, who had just returned from her private Okavango safari and gushed effusively about her experience.
