150 km ride, 314 m total ascent, 32°C maximum. We are heading straight south, and alternated between crosswind and headwind all day.
It is incredibly flat in Botswana; the Flat Earth Society could recruit members here. This is a field of sorghum.
We passed some large plots of fallow land.
Bikers, a young baobab tree, and a small termite mound (far right).
Spokane peloton (including me) on the very long straightaway.
Currently, drought conditions exist in Botswana.
Another veterinary checkpoint with a footpad to disinfect our shoes, and a puddle for us to ride our bikes through, to prevent the spread of foot and mouth disease in their livestock.
Destination is Elephant Sands, an unusual resort where the owner pipes in water from a well 14 km away, creating an artificial watering hole to attract elephants. The road into the campsite was 2 km long, with loose sand. Linda ended up with 2 thorn punctures in each tire tube upon arrival at camp.
The elephants come extremely close to the bar/restaurant. They are not bothered by humans. Their sole focus is to drink water. Cabins for hire in the background.
Better perspective of how close we actually are to the magnificent beasts.
Tame pet mongoose on the resort property.
These pyramidal blocks with sharp pointy rebar are set around the resort’s buildings and campsites to prevent the elephants from straying where they should not go.
Went to the bar for a nightcap about 7 PM, and many elephants were migrating in and out of the watering hole. Despite their size, they are almost silent when they move.
