Day 80 Sunday March 31 Ruze Chalets to Livingstone

by Henry

151 km, 581 m total ascent, 31°C maximum temperature. Overcast for most of the day.

Another blazing orange sunrise.

The road traveled today was much the same as the last two days, flat and scenically uninspiring. There were lots of ups and downs, but the general trajectory was downhill from 1300 m elevation at camp to 900 m elevation in Livingstone. We had some crosswind, but a tailwind helped propel us for most of the day. The road quality was generally good. The tarmac was not as smooth on the shoulder, so we would only ride on the shoulder when trucks and other vehicles were passing.

A steam engine from colonial days. Impressive piece of equipment, but original function is unknown to me.

In Livingston, we made a short pit stop at the Hungry Lion to get sundaes and a Pepsi Max.

Our campsite today was at SAFPAR Waterfront Camp on the Zambezi River, 3 km upstream from Victoria Falls. It was a fast day despite 151 km, and the fastest riders likely arrived at camp around noon.

After setting up our tents, we registered at the onsite activities office for whitewater rafting in the morning, to be followed by a sunset cruise (included for free when booking the rafting experience).

An entrepreneurial vendor came to the camp to sell T-shirts that could be imprinted with our choice of TDA logos, so many of us placed an order.

Geoff has been riding with us since the beginning in Cairo, and his wife Christine joined in Nairobi. They are departing back to Philadelphia from Livingstone, and graciously hosted a party for the group.

We are also losing three other sectional riders: Joost from the Netherlands, and Johann/Ties from South Africa.

Three staff members are also departing: Noah (Bubba), Dehon, and Malcolm.
