Day 67 Monday March 18 Chitimba Beach to Mzuzu

by Henry

It rained all night, and my tent is not completely waterproof, so things were damp inside my tent.

139 km, 2096 m up, 27°C maximum.

Sunrise view from my tent at Chitimba Camp.

Our route this morning took us along the lake shore and around the backside of this mountain before starting a steep 11 km climb. What can’t be appreciated in this picture is how many waterfalls there are on this mountain. Unfortunately, the road during the ascent was in terrible condition, and basically unpaved. We saw at least five of our fellow riders fixing flat tires.

Early morning view of Lake Malawi.

Near the top of the ascent, my last view of Lake Malawi, before we rode away from it. There were many baboons on this section of the road.

The hills and mountains here remain very green and lush, with an aura of the South Pacific.

To the right, a muddier, smaller stream at the confluence as it joins the bigger river.

After the initial 11 km steep climb, we then had 110 km of a gradual uphill for the rest of the day. I was very grateful that it was overcast for the whole day, which kept the heat at bay.

Upon arriving in Mzuzu, Malawi’s third largest city, we took a short detour to Shoprite (Africa’s largest chain of grocery stores), to pick up a few snacks.

Because of the detour to the store, we did not arrive at Macondo Camp until almost 5 PM. Our tents were wet from the night before, but we were unsuccessful in drying them out before the sun set.

Macondo Resort is owned and operated by two expat Italians. They offer a wonderful Italian restaurant menu, which we did not order from because dinner was provided from the TDA truck. However, we did enjoy two liqueurs (coffee and orange) that are made on site. Many of us ordered dessert from the menu. It is a shame we do not have more time to spend here.
