128 km, 100% unpaved again. Over 900 m total climb, 29°C for high temperature.
It rained some last night. The damp road made for a little more rolling resistance, since there was a thin sandy layer on top.
We followed the border of the Rungwa Game Reserve to our left. Supposedly the big five species are all in this reserve, but they know to stay away from the road, because they might get poached. Yesterday, we saw some elephant dung on the road. We spotted a few baboons right before lunch.
The road was considerably rougher and bumpier in the afternoon, with lots of washboard and potholes. Several areas were waterlogged with deeper sand. We ended up taking out some air from our tires to make the ride less jarring. Normally we would ride these 42 mm tires at 60 psi, but we deflated down to 40 psi, and might go lower tomorrow, depending on road conditions.
Thatched roof construction with another lifelike scarecrow.
I don’t see many locals fishing, but I did happen upon this young man with a line in the murky water.
This fully loaded semi-truck got deeply stuck in the soft, wet sand. Not clear how they’ll get this rig out.
Everyone has to share the road.
Certain segments required a short walk-a-bike.
Our bush camp tonight is at Biti Manyanga elementary school soccer field.
When we were setting up our tents, the students congregated to observe, as always.
There were complaints yesterday about the waiting time for a shower, because there was only enough tarp to create one shower stall for privacy. As a result, a sign-up list was trialed today. Several of us took a blue bucket back to our tents and washed up under the tent fly to avoid the wait.
