166 km, over 1200 m total climb, 33°C. We had mixed tailwind and headwind during the day.
There was the usual mayhem biking out of Arusha, with the early morning traffic going every which way. We again rode through the traffic circle containing the Clock Tower, representing the geographic midpoint between Cairo and Cape Town.
Once we got out of the city, the morning ride was generally downhill with a good tailwind, so we made good time to our lunch stop at 78 km.
My rear tire was going soft when still 20 km out from lunch, but I was able to make it in to lunch without it completely deflating. I found a wire puncturing the tire at the lunch stop.
Self-explanatory sign.
There was about 60 km of fairly flat riding after lunch on smooth tarmac.
New church construction in a small village.
The afternoon ride was filled with pastoral scenes.
Final 20 km climb of the day to our destination of Babati, in the distance. Our campsite was at the Ango Tree Lodge.
I had a glass cut in my rear tire from way back in Rwanda, which allowed sand and small rocky particles to get inside the tire. This in turn placed excessive wear on the inner tubes and caused an unacceptable number of flats, so I swapped it out for a new tire just before dinner.
We celebrated Elizabeth’s (from Sweden) birthday with ice cream after dinner. There was a hearty cheer from all when this treat was announced.
