Day 43 Friday February 23 Rest day in Nanyuki

by Henry

Slept well in a regular bed, but was bothered intermittently throughout the night by a mosquito buzzing around the room and ominous half-awake thoughts of getting malaria from it.

Breakfast buffet had an unusual offering. The gizzards were quite tender, and I enjoyed them, but most riders took a pass.

Rest day mornings are beehive of activity. Laundry is done and hung out to dry, bikes and drive trains are cleaned and oiled, tubes are patched, tires are pumped up to pressure, drinking bottles are washed.

There are British and American military bases near Nanyuki, so we saw numerous large military vehicles. Kenya is a British Commonwealth nation.

Notably, there are many “butcheries” around town, many of them specializing in camel meat.

There are huge hunks of camel hanging in many storefronts.

Although poverty abounds, there seems to be relative wealth in Kenya, compared to Rwanda and Uganda. A larger percentage of the population, especially the young people, have smartphones, compared to the old-fashioned Nokia handsets seen more commonly in Rwanda and Uganda.

After our rest day chores were completed, we took a 1 km stroll to Cedar Mall, and purchased provisions for a light lunch, to include some Greek yogurt, chips, and ice cream. We also bought a chocolate bar and Haribo gummies for dessert after dinner.

Relatively modern apartment building.

My hair was getting unruly and hot under the bike helmet, so it was time for a trim. Seamus, who was born and raised in Nanyuki, gave me a very carefully crafted and professional haircut.

We had a relaxing dinner at the hotel, and then it was time to get some rest for the next two riding days as we approach Nairobi.
