Morning glory at bush camp.
Our route took us into Ol Pejeta Conservancy, on completely unpaved roads. Since we rode in small groups, not all of us saw the same animals. Only a few lucky ones saw elephants. Other animals that were spotted: giraffes, baboons, zebras, hyenas, warthogs, nyalas, gazelles, camels.
One of the better pictures from the group of a giraffe. Majestic creatures.
Many zebra spotted in large herds right next to the road.
Didn’t expect to see camels, but they were present.
Our 44 km stretch of dirt road in the Conservancy, with Mount Kenya in the distance. Chunky and rocky, more suited for a mountain bike than a road bike.
The road quality varied tremendously. What looks to be smooth riding on the right is actually washboard. There is an upper path to the left that we often took, but had to be careful not to get flats from acacia thorns.
In the Conservancy, we also saw several small villages of Turkana tribal cattle and sheep herders. They were easily recognizable by their lanky frames and colorful attire.
Over the last three days, we’ve traversed long stretches of unpaved road. Apparently, we were re-routed from the original itinerary because there were reports in January from TDA scouts of bandits on the main paved roads.
Sportsman’s Arms Hotel in Nanyuki was our destination and we will enjoy one rest day there.
