Day 4: Monday January 15 El Gouna to Safaga

By Henry

Shorter ride today. 81 km. Strong tailwind. 20°C and blue sunny skies. The mountains to the west were distinctly in a haze. Not smoke, but likely desert sand micro-particulates suspended in the atmosphere. There is a layer of brown microscopic sand particles that coats everything outside.

Breakfast line. The last stragglers peddled out of El Gouna by 7:30 a.m.

Our tour leader said Dougie was stolen the day before, and I inadvertently rode by the lunch stop at 65 km, which would have been an early lunch at 10 AM.  Fortunately, not an issue today; it was only an additional 16 km to the final destination. We'll have a new mascot soon.

Samaritan Tim never fails to sniff out a project. In this case, it was simply low tire pressure, thus a quick fix.

Our waterfront beach campsite at El LaGoonie Lodge in Safaga. Everyone arrived before noon. Tomorrow is a rest day, so we will be camped here for two nights.

The Spokane suburb on the beach.

View from the water. TDA rented out two hotel rooms for all of us to share as communal bathrooms and showers.

We all enjoyed a leisurely afternoon on the beach.

We had eggplant, falafel, and omelet pita sandwiches for dinner at roadside stand in Safaga. Tim asked for a side order of potato chips, but instead got a potato chip pita sandwich. Such is the state of our Arabic language skills, even with much handwaving and pointing. Each pita sandwich was 15 Egyptian pounds, or $0.50.

Ho-Hos and Twinkies are universal.

Twilight glow in Safaga with lit up minaret on our stroll after dinner.

Early to bed, as is the norm these days. Everyone was in their tents by 8 PM.
